There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are apparently needed to cross, there are means around this, as is real of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge casino, features 150 slots and sixty tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred one armed bandits and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that contains many comforts on top of the gambling den, which contains 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
