There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, where casino wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and although visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is real of most borders.

The original Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that features many luxuries on top of the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
